Species: Smallmouth Bass
Time of year: Late May and June
How to Fish: Topwater lures are deadly when males smallmouth are protecting beds during the spawn. You can sight cast for them by looking for their circular beds. They prefer sandy shorelines, bays, and points. Please release these fish and be careful handling them. They are protecting our future fish.
Choosing Color: The vibration and noise in the water are the key attractants. All the colors work.
Why: Smallmouth bass will be protecting their spawning beds during early spring. They are very aggressive and will chase all intruders. Tube jigs and Mepps spinners work well, but nothing is more exciting than seeing a bass scream up and hit the torpedo.
- Rig up two rods; one with a torpedo and one with a subsurface lure
- The person in the bow needs to spot beds so you can sneak up. Make a long cast not to scare them off the bed.
